Life Expectancy Increases

Via Val Vannet's HigherGeogBlog.
What reasons can you come up with for the changes shown on these maps ?
What changes can you see ?
Are there any areas which have experienced a larger / smaller than average increase in life expectancy ?

Going Global book by Guardian

Flick read through this book the other day. Published by "The Guardian" - looks to be rather useful for the, er... "Going Global" unit... £9.09 from Amazon rather than £12.99 in bookshops.

Slideshare post on China's demographics

May come in handy for someone...

Thanet Earth

As featured on Countryfile today.
THANETEARTH is a huge agricultural project which is aimed at supplying a huge amount of salad crops all year round. It is a group of huge greenhouses, currently under construction in Kent. It is set to provide 500 jobs for the area. The farming type is HYDROPONICS: plants are grown in nutrient filled water tubes.
Farming seems to be on the up finally due to the rising cost of food...
The website is opening soon, and you can get a flavour for the project in THIS KENT TV VIDEO.
The place has certain benefits:
Thanet has temperate climate, has national grid line running across the site. It will lalso use biological pest-control methods.
Also a good review in "The Observer" for a book called CHINESE WHISPERS, which looks at the stories behind the use of Chinese labour in Britain.

Tornado Chasing

A good report on the BBC website, with Simon Hancock chasing tornadoes in Tornado Alley.
Read it HERE.

Some good embedded videos, including one explaining HOW TORNADOES FORM.
