Wikipedia article on NEW URBANISM has some interesting ideas on urban change.
I was interested in the example of SEASIDE in Florida, which featured in the film: 'The Truman Show'. This is a new urbanist community, which has a remarkable sense of place.
The website has a virtual tour feature.There are also links to a holiday rental site which has some nice panoramas of the place.
